Dear Parents,

I would like to congratulate Miguel in yr13 who has been awarded the 90% Excellence Scholarship in the Tec de Monterrey, Qro. Best of luck, Miguel.

We have connections and scholarships with a number of excellent universities, such as the Tec de Monterrey, which we consider vital for our Prepa students. On Wednesday this week year 12 students visited the University of the Americas in Puebla accompanied by Mrs Gilby, Mr Hiley and Lety Ochoa. They were interested to learn about the courses on offer in the beautiful campus and meet up with our ex-student Armando Cedillo who is studying music there. The word of the week is future.

Our year 10 students had a wonderful trip to Mexico City last Thursday and Friday. They visited the Memory and Tolerance Museum, the Papalote Museum for Kids, the National Viceroyalty Museum and the Xochitla Ecological Park. It was a very informative visit and we highly recommend you try to visit the Memory and Tolerance Museum which the students really liked. Thank you to Mrs. Pallares, Mrs. Colores, Mr Binnis and Mr Gregory for organizing the trip which I know has provided lots of learning opportunities.

Another thank you to Phillip Barkhuizen who is continuing to work on the cricket nets every day, including weekends! The actual nets are now in place and everything covered to avoid any injury from flying balls delivered by the bowling machine. They’ll have lots of fun.

Thanks also to Jessica in year 10 for her work beautifying the school.

My trip to the UK went very well and I am pleased to share with you that we have recruited four teachers for the next academic year: Mr O´Connor (Primary Teacher), Miss Kulla (Primary Teacher), Mr Citrine (Secondary Science Teacher) and some of you may remember Mr Greenslade who is returning with his family as our Secondary Art Teacher!

Our Parents’ Association has organised Health and Human Development Week during which they will be running a series of conferences about topics that are of great interest not only to parents but to Secondary and Prepa students as well. With this newsletter you are sent a calendar of the talks that will be held so you can attend those of most interest to you. The number of people who can attend is limited so please register for any talk with Lety Ochoa in Reception. The PA is requesting that parents give a donation of $15 pesos per talk they attend. If you would like more information, please contact Gloria Castañón, President of the Parents’ Association. We hope to see you there!

Next week, my parenting course will be focusing on the self-regulation aspect of emotional literacy.  We will be exploring ways in which we can support our children to become more aware of how they manage their feelings and behaviour.  This will be on Wednesday at 1:45pm in room 1010.

For those of you who enjoy cycling, a group of local people have started to meet at 9pm on Friday evenings outside the church in the main plaza where the ride begins.  This weekly event has been inspired by the very successful project in the city of Queretaro where over 1500 people now meet on a weekly basis to cycle together.

If you have any tricycles that you are no longer using and would like them put to good use, please consider donating them to our Kinder area. Thank you!

Don’t forget that in February you can pay your inscription fees with a 10% discount. You must be up to date with all your tuition fees in order to pay and receive the discount.

Primary Music Night on Friday 22nd February and starts at 6.30pm. Tickets will be on sale on Tuesday for the performers and Wednesday for all those who would like to attend.

Don’t forget that this Saturday and Sunday, 16^th and 17^th February, there is a Rugby tournament in Queretaro starting at 8am in which some VICTORIA students are participating. It will be held in the Municipal Stadium next to the Gómez Morín library. We hope you will attend.

I hope to see you all at the disco tonight at the Viu which has been organised by our PA to raise funds for school development.  It starts at 9pm and the tickets cost $100 each; if you still don’t have a ticket, you can purchase them at the door.

ESTIMADOS PADRES DE FAMILIA:

Quiero felicitar a Miguel de Año 13 por haber recibido la Beca de Excelencia del Tec de Monterrey campus Querétaro. Te deseamos mucha suerte Miguel.

Tenemos acuerdos de beca y conexiones con varias universidades de excelente nivel, como el Tec de Monterrey, lo cual consideramos vital para nuestros alumnos de Prepa. El miércoles de esta semana, los alumnos de Año 12 visitaron la Universidad de las Américas en Puebla acompañados por Mrs Gilby, Mr Hiley y Lety Ochoa. Estaban interesados en conocer más acerca de los cursos que ofrecen en tan bello campus y poder ver a nuestro ex-alumno, Armando Cedillo, quien se encuentra estudiando Música allí. La palabra de la semana es futuro.

Nuestros estudiantes de Año 10 tuvieron un excelente viaje a la Ciudad de México el jueves y viernes de la semana pasada. Visitaron el Museo de la Memoria y la Tolerancia, el Museo Papalote, el Museo del Virreinato y el Parque Ecológico Xochitla. Fue una visita muy informativa y les recomendamos que visiten el Museo de la Memoria y la Tolerancia que les gustó mucho a los alumnos. Muchas gracias a Mrs. Pallares, Mrs. Colores, Mr Binnis y Mr Gregory por organizar este viaje donde se les ofrecieron muchas oportunidades de aprendizaje.

¡De nuevo queremos agradecerle a Phillip Barkhuizen por seguir trabajando en las mallas de cricket, aun en fin de semana! Ya están instaladas las mallas de protección para evitar que las pelotas de cricket causen alguna lesión a las personas que se encuentren alrededor. Se divertirán mucho.

También le queremos dar las gracias a Jessica en Año 10 por todo su trabajo en hacer de nuestra escuela un lugar más bonito.

Me fue muy bien en mi viaje al Reino Unido y me da mucho gusto compartirles que he contratado a 4 maestros para el siguiente ciclo escolar: Mr O´Connor (Primaria), Miss Kulla (Primaria), Mr Citrine (Maestro de Ciencias en Secundaria) y algunos de ustedes recordarán a Mr Greenslade quien regresa con su familia como nuestro maestro de Arte en Secundaria.

Nuestra asociación de Padres de Familia ha organizado una Jornada de Salud y Desarrollo Humano durante la cual tendrán varias pláticas acerca de temas de gran interés no solo para padres de familia sino también para los estudiantes en Secundaria y Prepa. Con esta carta semanal recibirán un calendario de las pláticas para que puedan asistir a aquellas que más les interesen. El cupo es limitado por lo que les pedimos que se registren para cualquiera de las pláticas con Lety Ochoa en Recepción. El donativo para entrar a cada plática es de $15.00. La próxima semana, en mi curso para padres, nos estaremos enfocando al aspecto de la auto-regulación en el conocimiento  emocional. Estaremos viendo la manera en que podemos apoyar a nuestros hijos a que sean más conscientes en el manejo de sus emociones y conductas. Este curso se llevará a cabo el miércoles a la 1:45 p.m. en el salón 1010.

Para aquellos de ustedes que disfrutan del ciclismo, un grupo de personas de Tequisquiapan ha empezado a reunirse a las 9 p.m. los viernes por la noche en frente de la iglesia en la plaza principal donde inician su recorrido. Este evento semanal fue inspirado por un proyecto de  la ciudad de Querétaro donde ya se reúnen más de 1500 personas a la semana para andar en bici juntos.

Si tienen triciclos que ya no utilizan y les gustaría que se les de algún uso, por favor consideren donarlos a la escuela para nuestro Kinder. ¡Gracias!

No olviden que en febrero pueden recibir un 10% de descuento en el pago de sus inscripciones. Deberán estar al corriente con sus colegiaturas para poder pagar la inscripción con descuento.

La Noche Musical de Primaria es el viernes 22 de febrero a las 6:30 p.m. Los alumnos que participan podrán comprar sus boletos el martes y el público en general los podrá comprar el miércoles.

No olviden que el sábado y domingo, 16 y 17 de febrero, es el Torneo de Rugby en Querétaro a las 8 a.m. donde algunos alumnos del VICTORIA estarán participando. Se llevará a cabo en el Estadio Municipal, a un lado de la Biblioteca Gómez Morín. Espero que puedan asistir.

Hoy es la Noche de Disco de los 80’s en el Viu y espero verlos allí. Los fondos se utilizarán para el desarrollo del colegio. Empieza a las 9 p.m. y los boletos tienen un costo de $100 cada uno. Si no han comprado sus boletos lo podrán hacer en la puerta de la discoteca.

Dear Parents,

I hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend. It was a good opportunity for work to be done in school and I would like to thank Phillip Barkhuizen for giving up his time to supervise the foundations of our cricket practice nets and the Mexico Cricket Association for the funding involved.

Last Wednesday, Ale Liz and Maria José from Yr10, went to the Tequisquiapan orphanage with a generous donation raised by our Student Council. Thank you for your support.

Dr Tanner says that she is finding UK extremely cold at the moment and very expensive! She also reports that she has employed some excellent teachers for the next academic year.

I was interested in some more news from UK, this week. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea have decided to remove a huge number of litter bins from the streets and public areas! The bins seem to attract more rubbish and without them people will have to take their litter home or, even better, create less rubbish. This is exactly our policy at VICTORIA. By expecting students to take their lunch-box wrappers and containers home with them, we hope that they will become more aware of the packaging before even buying their groceries.

Congratulations to all those students who participated in the Basic Competency Olympics. Some of them have gone on to the next stage and we wish Deneb yr 8, Natalia yr 8, Fernando yr 8, and María José yr 10 the best of luck.

More congratulations go to our Secondary and Prepa students who played volleyball against Sovany last Tuesday. The score was the following: first set 25-18 VICTORIA, second set 22-25 the third 7-15. Well done!

I enjoy getting the email version of this letter, every Friday, as it so often contains colour photos of the week’s events. I didn’t realise, until this week, that Telmex Prodigy customers fail to receive MailChimp! Mrs Gilby has solved this problem by providing an alternative email address. If this is why you still ask for a printed version, please provide us with another address (just send an email to Gloria Sánchez at gsc.ibv@gmail.com), or contact Telmex about their problem with MailChimp, and enjoy the pictures!

Security has become a very important issue these days and it is VICTORIA policy not to release students to adults who are not previously authorised, in writing, by their parents. There is a pink authorisation sheet in your child’s file that can be updated at any time. However if there is no written notice in their diaries, written permission must be sent to school via email from a known email address and it must include a previously registered phone number where we can get in touch with the parent to confirm the permission. Phone calls to school are only accepted when the adult collecting the student has been registered on the pink authorisation sheet. Thank you for your cooperation.

February inscriptions: This month there is a 10% discount on inscriptions, which are based on this year’s school fees. In order to pay inscriptions, families must be up to date with all their tuition payments. Inscriptions paid during March, April or May are also based on current fees but there is no discount. In June inscriptions are based on the fee levels set for next year. Word of the week is anticipation.

ESTIMADOS PADRES DE FAMILIA:

Espero que todos hayan disfrutado del puente. Fue una buena oportunidad para que pudiéramos realizar algunos trabajos de mejora en la escuela y quisiera darle las gracias a Philip Barkhuizen por donar su tiempo al supervisar la instalación de las redes para la caja de práctica de cricket además de agradecerle a la Asociación Mexicana de Cricket los fondos para hacerlo realidad.

El miércoles de esta semana, Ale Liz y María José de Año 10 visitaron la Casa Hogar y entregaron una donación muy generosa que reunió el Consejo Estudiantil. ¡Muchas gracias por su apoyo!

¡Dra. Tanner dice, encontró el Reino Unido con temperaturas muy bajas y los precios están muy altos! También ya nos escribió que ha contratado excelentes maestros para el siguiente ciclo escolar.

Me interesaba saber más de lo que ocurre en el Reino Unido. El Municipio Real de Kensington y Chelsea han decidido quitar el gran número de botes de basura que se encuentran en las calles y áreas públicas. Al parecer, los botes atraen más basura y sin ellos la gente se verá forzada a llevar su basura a sus casas, o mejor aún, crear menos basura. Esta idea es la política del VICTORIA. Al hacer que los alumnos se lleven sus empaques y contenedores del lunch a casa al final del día, tenemos la esperanza que se vuelvan más conscientes de los empaques de los productos antes que hagan sus compras.

Muchas felicidades a todos los alumnos que participaron en las Olimpiadas Básicas de Competencias. Algunos de ellos lograron lugares a la siguiente etapa y les deseamos a Deneb (Año 8), Natalia (Año 8), Fernando (Año 8) y María José (Año 10) mucha suerte.

Hay más felicitaciones para los alumnos de Secundaria y Prepa quienes jugaron voleibol en contra del Sovany el pasado martes. El marcador fue el siguiente: primer set 25-18 VICTORIA, segundo set 22-25 y el tercer set 7-15. ¡Bien hecho!

Me gusta mucho recibir la versión electrónica de la carta semanal cada viernes, ya que incluye fotografías a color de los eventos de la semana. No me había dado cuenta hasta esta semana que aquellas personas, clientes de Telmex Prodigy, no reciben los correos de MailChimp. Mrs. Gilby tuvo el mismo problema y lo resolvió al dar una dirección de correo alterno. Si esta es la razón por la cual no se han cambiado de la versión impresa a la electrónica, envíen un correo alterno (a Gloria Sánchez gsc.ibv@gmail.com), o contacten a Telmex para reportar este problema. ¡Así podrán disfrutar de las fotos a color!

La seguridad se ha vuelto un tema muy importante y la política del VICTORIA es no entregar a los alumnos a adultos que no están autorizados, por escrito, por sus padres. Tenemos una hoja rosa de autorización en cada uno de los archivos de los alumnos que se puede actualizar en cualquier momento. Sin embargo, si no hay una autorización previa por escrito en los diarios, es necesario enviar un correo electrónico de una dirección conocida y deberá incluir el número telefónico previamente registrado con nosotros para que podamos confirmar el permiso. Las llamadas a la escuela para notificar que otra persona se llevará a sus hijos solo se aceptan cuando el adulto está previamente registrado en la hoja rosa de autorización. Les agradecemos mucho su cooperación.

Inscripciones en febrero: Este mes hay un 10% de descuento en las inscripciones con base en las tarifas de este año. Para realizar el pago de inscripciones con descuento, la familia deberá estar al corriente con todas sus colegiaturas. Aquellas inscripciones que se pagan en marzo, abril o mayo se basan en las mismas tarifas pero sin descuento. En junio, las inscripciones se pagarán de acuerdo a las tarifas nuevas para el siguiente ciclo escolar. La palabra de la semana es anticipación.

Dear Parents, 

As you know, Dr Tanner is in UK this week interviewing teachers for the new academic year. She is pleased with the quality of applicants as well as being very happy that so many of our current staff are choosing to stay.

We also have other exciting news from UK. I’m sure that many of you will remember Norma Susana Martínez Grande who studied Secondary and Prepa here in VICTORIA, and Mr Blowfield, who taught Maths. They moved to UK soon after their marriage in 2006 and last Friday Jasper and Sofia, their twins, arrived. Congratulations to the new family!

Congratulations too, to Suzie Wright who has been awarded a place to read English at Oxford University. Suzie was here in 2004, for rather longer than expected after being involved in a sailing accident. The VICTORIA community was wonderfully welcoming and supportive of Suzie and her family, who continue to visit us, so I know that you will be pleased to hear of her achievement.

This year's Y12 trip to Tolantongo was better than usual. There was more water in the river, fewer other visitors, and a lot more sunshine than last year. The intrepid group explored the amazing tunnel, where hot water emerges from every side, the large water-filled cave below and then showed off their diving abilities at the swimming pool. After lunch they relaxed in the warm, white water of the river and went on an adventurous, scratchy trek further down the canyon; which involved crossing the fast-flowing river three more times, with a safety rope, of course. An ice cream in Ixmiquilpan was the perfect end to this exciting day. Thanks to Mr Binnis, Miss Wrigley and Mr Nevett. Those of you who receive the newsletter via email can see that they had a great time from the colour pictures!

The week before last, we received a very generous donation of two beautiful rugs for our Reception. Thank you very much to Araceli Hererra. Lety O. and Gloria S. are much warmer and more comfortable. The word of the week is cushioned.

On Thursday and Friday of next week, 7th and 8th February, some of our students from San Juan del Río and San Gil will be performing in the play ‘Pluto and the Universe’ directed by Fabiola Johnson La Rue. The play will be presented at the San Gil Club House at 7 pm and tickets are $50 pesos.

Please remember that, for safety reasons, students are not left waiting at the gate at 3:15. They will be taken care of inside school, often in Homework Club. If you know that you will be late collecting your child, please let them or us know and save them a 15 min wait before going indoors. Due to low attendance, Rugby Club has been cancelled. We will be running special Rugby sessions instead with teams from Queretaro and Celaya. More information will be given in the future. 

February 15th St Valentine’s 80’s disco night 

This is an event for parents and other adults, so plan to come and enjoy yourselves without the children! Tickets are on sale for $100 for a very special evening starting 9pm at Viu and the funds go to building a VICTORIA auditorium. For further information contact Gloria Castañón, Parent Association President. 
Other reminders: 

• School will be closed on Monday 4th February for the celebration of the Mexican Constitution. 
• Parents with children in years 11, 12 and 13: In October you were given the VICTORIA Prepa Policy. If you have not signed and returned it to school, please do so as soon as possible. If you have lost your copy, contact Lety Ochoa in Reception. It is important that you read, sign and return this document to school. 
• Don’t forget to keep checking the timetable of after school activities as new ones are appearing. Banda de Guerra is now open to Primary students and I can hear how much they are enjoying it! Don’t forget to collect you children at 4 pm after activities. 
• If you would like to have a babysitter for the 15th February then please contact the school. Lety has a list of Prepa girls who would be willing to babysit for a reasonable fee. Please leave your name and phone number and they will contact you.

ESTIMADOS PADRES DE FAMILIA: 

Como ya han de saber, esta semana la Dra. Tanner se encuentra en el Reino Unido entrevistando a maestros para el siguiente ciclo escolar. Está contenta con la calidad de los solicitantes y con el hecho de que muchos de los maestros ahorita en VICTORIA decidieron quedarse.

Tenemos más noticias del Reino Unido. Estoy segura que muchos de ustedes recordarán a Norma Susana Martínez Grande quien estudió con nosotros Secundaria y Prepa, y a Mr Blowfield, quien impartió clases de Matemáticas. Después de casarse en el 2006, se mudaron al Reino Unido y el viernes pasado le dieron la bienvenida a sus cuates, Jasper y Sofia. ¡Muchas felicidades a la nueva familia!

También queremos felicitar a Suzie Wright a quien se le concedió un lugar para leer inglés en la Universidad de Oxford. Suzie nos visitó en el 2004 y al sufrir un accidente en un velero, tuvo que permanecer en México más tiempo de lo planeado. La comunidad VICTORIA fue muy hospitalaria y apoyaron mucho a Suzie y a su familia, quienes continúan visitándonos. Tengo la seguridad que les dará mucho gusto saber de sus logros.

Este año, el viaje del grupo de Año 12 a Tolantongo estuvo mejor que otros años. Hubo más agua en el río, menos visitantes y bastante más sol que el año pasado. El intrépido grupo exploró el increíble túnel donde el agua termal emerge de ambos lados, visitó la cueva subterránea y luego los alumnos presumieron sus clavados en la alberca. Después de la comida descansaron en el agua calientita del río para después aventurarse a caminar por la cañada. Esta caminata involucró cruzar el río con corrientes muy fuertes, desde luego con el apoyo de una cuerda. Un helado en Ixmiquilpan fue la forma ideal para darle fin a un día perfecto y emocionante. Gracias Mr Binnis, Miss Wrigley y Mr Nevett. Para aquellos de ustedes que reciben la carta semanal en su correo electrónico, podrán ver lo que se divirtieron en las fotografías a color que incluimos.

La semana antepasada nos hicieron una donación extraordinaria de dos tapetes preciosos para Recepción. Muchas gracias Araceli Hererra. Lety O. y Gloria S. ya no sufren tanto con el frío y están más cómodas. La palabra de la semana es acojinado.

El jueves y viernes de la próxima semana, 7 y 8 de febrero, algunos de nuestros alumnos de San Juan del Río y San Gil presentarán la obra ‘Plutón y el Universo’ dirigida por Fabiola Johnson La Rue. La obra se presentará en la Casa Club de San Gil a las 7 p.m. y los boletos tienen un costo de $50.00 pesos.

Les recordamos que por razones de seguridad, no permitimos que los estudiantes permanezcan en la puerta después de las 3:15 p.m. Cuidamos de ellos dentro de la escuela, muchas veces en el Club de Tareas. Les pedimos que de antemano si saben que llegarán tarde por sus hijos, les avisen a ellos o a la escuela y de esta manera ahorrarles la espera de 15 minutos antes de que los enviemos al interior del colegio.

Por falta de quorum, tendremos que cancelar la actividad del Club de Rugby. Estaremos ofreciendo sesiones especiales de Rugby con dos equipos de Querétaro y Celaya. Les proporcionaré más información en el futuro.

15 de febrero Día de San Valentín Noche de disco de los 80’s 

Este evento es solo para adultos para que puedan planear una noche de diversión sin hijos. Los boletos están a la venta con un costo de $100.00 pesos e inicia a las 9 p.m. en el Viu. El dinero que se recaude se utilizará para la construcción de un Auditorio en VICTORIA. Para más información comuníquense con Gloria Castañón, Presidenta de la Asociación de Padres de Familia. 

Más recordatorios: 

• No habrá clases el lunes 4 de febrero por la celebración del Día de la Constitución. 
• Padres de familia con hijos en Años 11, 12 y 13: En octubre del año pasado se les entregó el Reglamento Interno de Preparatoria del VICTORIA. En caso de que no lo hayan firmado y entregado a la escuela, les pedimos lo hagan lo más pronto posible. Si extraviaron su copia, favor de comunicarse con Lety Ochoa en Recepción. Es importante que lo lean, firmen y regresen el documento a la escuela. 
• Revisen continuamente el horario de las actividades extracurriculares ya que se han agregado nuevas actividades. Banda de Guerra está abierto para alumnos de Primaria y se escucha que lo disfrutan. No se les olvide recoger a sus hijos a las 4 p.m. al terminar las actividades. 
• Si necesitan alguien que cuide de sus hijos para el evento del 15 de febrero, por favor comuníquense a la escuela. Lety O tiene una lista de niñas en Prepa que pueden cuidar de ellos a un costo razonable. Por favor dejen su nombre y número telefónico para que ellas se comuniquen.
